If you google “church growth” you will be flooded with books, blogs, and videos showing how to do so. As great as these resources may be, you have to take them with a grain of salt.
It’s easy to get caught up in reading about another church’s growth method and wrongfully try to apply their strategy to your own. The reality is this: Your church is not their church.
When I was a child my parents would always encourage me to “be my own person”. Why? Because there is nobody else like me. I am a unique individual who’s one-of-a-kind. Sure, there are other guys out there who wear size 11 shoes, prefer brown to black and wear large t-shirts. Does that mean all of us like listening to Pink Floyd while grilling a steak? Absolutely not! We are who we are. The same applies to churches.
Your church may have a large a golf course behind it while another is sandwiched between buildings downtown.
Your church may have a more traditional worship while another is a more contemporary style.
Your church may operate a soup kitchen on Saturday’s while another focuses on supporting a local elementary school.
I could go on all day…but you get the point.
True growth is in discipleship-
The foundation of church growth is not in the type of music you play, the bible you use, or the people you minister to. It’s in discipleship. Here’s what Jesus had to say about discipleship:
Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” – Matthew 26:16-20
Do you want to grow your church? Start with making disciples. “Sustainable outward growth can only occur with surrendered inward growth.” That quote is so good you should Tweet It/Facebook Post It/Write it down and tell your friends about it. Seriously!
That being said, we did come across a nice article that is super applicable to churches of all shapes and sizes regarding church growth. You can check it out on the bottom.
Don’t forget, as your church grows you need to be diligent about keeping track of info like your attendance and finances. If you haven’t already started using a church software (ChMs for short), start your FREE TRIAL with ChurchTrac today.
